An experimental investigation of the impact of individual, program, and organizational characteristics on software maintenance eort

چکیده

Resources allocated to software maintenance constitute a major portion of the total lifecycle cost of a system and can e€ect the ability of an organization to react to dynamic environments. A major component of software maintenance resources is analyst and programmer labor. This paper is an experimental evaluation of how the Human Information Processing (HIP) model can serve as a framework for examining the interaction of an individual's information processing capability and characteristics of the maintenance task. Independent variables investigated include program size, control ̄ow complexity, variable name mnemonicity, time pressure, level of semantic knowledge and some of their interactions on maintenance e€ort. Data collection was done using the Program Maintenance Performance Testing System (PROMPTS) designed especially for the experiment. The results indicate that a HIP perspective on software maintenance may contribute to a decrease in maintenance cost and increase the responsiveness of maintenance to changing organizational needs.
